John Brough Bamboo Rod

11th July 2010

Brought the Brough rod to try out the casting.

First, I put a #4 weight, WF line on it. Casted ok, but the feel wasn't what I would have liked.

Changed to a reel with a #4 DT line on and tried again. The feel was much more better. I could cast further with ease. A very smooth feeling.

Caught several temensis peacock basses.

The biggest was 1.5 pounds on the boga grip.

This one was caught at MacRitchie.

Caught this temensis on 26th December 2010 at BKE.

Look at the size compare with the little Fairy.

LJ Downes Bamboo Rod

I wonder if it could be the weather or the rod has not been used for a long time.

The first time I use it, the reel seat cap came off while I was trying to secure the reel to the reel seat.

After fishing, the ferrule got stuck. I took out the rubber mat and followed all instruction in the book to separate the ferrules. The ferrule separated from the blank instead.

Poor glue work or weather?

My email to ask them what silk and varnish was unanswered. I could do the repairs myself but think I better get Uncle Wong to do it for me. He's a pro now.

I clean up the ferrule and send the rod to Uncle Wong for repairs.

This is the First Bamboo rod that I owned.

CY Kuan and I got it from Tenku few years ago.

Since then there's no looking back and CY had gone on to acquire a whole collection of bamboo rods from many reknown bamboo rod makers.

Me, I managed to re-built 2 bamboo rods on my own using an old 3 section rods I got from eBay. Then poisoned Uncle Wong that he is now making rods on his own.

The rest is what they say - History, when the LeoRod was created.I have caught many fishes with this McDowell, and it was my favourite rod.

It still is one of my favourite rods and I still use it more often than the other rods.

Powerful #4 weight rod. I normally overline it with a #5 weight fly line so that I can cast the bigger, heavier flies better.

Uncle Wong is the first Singaporean to make a bamboo fly rod right here in Singapore. Until now, perhaps he is the One-And-Only bamboo fly rod maker in Singapore. CY will be the other bamboo fly rod maker soon.

This is the second bamboo rod I acquired from the USA.
I was very impressed with the McDowell.
The guys told me that Chris McDowell learned to make bamboo rods from AJ Thramer, and that AJ's rods are even better than Chris. So I asked Ron to get me this AJ Thramer hollow built and I was not disappointed with it.
